Mint!!

Some days back I decided to consciously work on my money habits after leaving a meeting. Well, some of these things you might know, but just like me, you don’t even know why such habits should be kept you or you just don’t care.

Let’s talk about 2 of them

Firstly, folding and squeezing money. Without any data, I’m sure over 90% of Nigerians are well guilty of this, you’ll hardly see any straight money except you just left the ATM or counter.

Now here’s a context to why “money maltreatment” should be stopped. Since we all agree that money is a spirit, shouldn’t it bother you that the way you treat it determines whether it will stay or run away from you?

Well, you could say a spirit has a mind of its own, but any spirit you treat right, give attention to nurture will always stay with you. So, this year and beyond, a good habit to keep is treating the notes in care well enough regardless of how economically valueless it might seem.

No matter how valueless naira is, nobody wants it scarce from them.

Stop squeezing out 50naira in traffic to buy water, stop squeezing those notes in your bag, not even in a church should you squeeze money into the offering basket, drop your 100bucks with your chest.

I’d advice get a wallet, for every cash at hand, straighten it inside that’s your bit. Plus I think having a wallet helps track your spending, you know how much you left the house with and what’s left at night. I went months without wallets and on some days I keep spending thinking I still have 1k somewhere in my pocket to take me home.

Secondly, BUDGET. Growing up for most of us has this habit inculcated in us, but with time a lot of us outgrew it or it just doesn’t work. Well, “DISCIPLINE” that’s just it.

A context to it, money should be treated like your lover, anticipate its coming, prepare well for it, don’t give room for excesses or anything like it and it’ll reward you more. This way money can feel comfortable coming around you because there’s always a plan.

So, if my vendor friend comes with that shirt, I’ll tell them to wait till next month or wait for the next budget. I’m learning to say, “maybe next time, I can’t afford it now” or jumping to make promises of purchase.

For sure there are moments of unplanned spendings; health, black tax, fixing your car, house maintenance etc. But it can’t be too bad for you that this happens every month. And if it does, budget a particular amount for miscellaneous so you’re not always caught unawares.

This isn’t to say, anyone should be stingy, but you know your income can be better managed with a good money habit.

You might say where is the money for all these plenty plenty wahala, but remember, you’ve got to have a plan for when it comes.

Let’s ride the wave of 2021 spending this bucks like we’re truly ready for it.

Any money habit you want to share?
