My failed introduction into the Tech World

This probably would have been me… Of course not, I’m lying.

An event I attended over the weekend just brought back a memory, a perfect example of “when it happens before it’s time, it might crash”.

The rave around tech products and the tech ecosystem has been really wild and almost unbelievable when you begin to hear stats, cashouts and opportunities. At several points, I’ve taken time to pause and ask, what is this craze about? Well, the world has moved, you either adapt or die. For me, I’m not given to either of the two, but it’s not a talk for today.

At this event, these guys came to market their tech product, a platform that curates all delivery companies in Lagos, all you need do is, sign up, select the best per price and run your order. Quite simple, a good product I think.

Fast forward to this week, something I had once contemplated struck me; something I thought was the best thing I could have executed in my undergraduate days, long before the rave about the Tech ecosystem.

I had the idea of curating all restaurants in school on a single platform, you order your meal from a preferred restaurant and our delivery guys will bring it to your doorstep. At the time, my profit will come from the deliveries I make, I also hoped to expand the delivery business into the Ilorin community because, at the time, there was nothing like delivery services in town.

I didn’t know jack about running stuff like this so I started walking from restaurants to restaurants sharing proposals way before I had a platform. I was privileged to be in a communications faculty, so I spoke with a computer science guy (the same guy who threatened to beat me up because I was “chyking” babes he couldn’t get in 100 level). I can’t even remember what his advice was, but it’s obvious the idea died eventually.

When I hear what people call tech products these days, I honestly marvel. I see how simple these things are, yet spilling crazy figures. I know a lot of work goes into ideating, planning, developing and launching but bruv, I still wonder.

Now, back to my lazy idea at the time, maybe I didn’t have a proper plan, maybe I spoke with the wrong person (obviously), but if that idea had kicked off, I doubt if it will still exist today. Not because of managerial issues but somewhere in my head, I think it was way ahead of its time or I most likely wouldn’t have asked the right questions before launching.

Zeal would never have been enough and boy, I had lots of it.

This is to say, we have finally adopted a more hip and bubbly word for what has been before its general acceptance. Now, I’m thinking of a tech product, let all of us be doing this tech thing together.
